    2. The jobless rate — which hit 8.5 percent last month — is expected to reach 10 percent by year's end. Sallie Mae will be adding 2,000 jobs to their corporation within the next 18 months. The jobs will vary from call center jobs, information technology and operation support roles. A job fair hosted by the Reston, Va.-based company in December for the Delaware site saw more than 800 attendees and at least 2,300 more apply online. The lender said at the time that it planned to hire 1,100 workers for the facility by the end of 2011.

    3. So far out of this whole economic situation, Sallie Mae to add 2,000 new jobs is the first sign of getting out of the recession. This is great news, it will provide 2,000 more people with jobs and help out the Sallie Mae Corp. Sallie Mae is a company that provides student loans. This will have a huge domino effect on the economic situation.

  2. http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/08/news/companies/gm_china.reut/index.htm?postversion=2009040808

This article is about how General Motors Corp said on Wednesday its China sales in March rose 24.6%. This rose from a year earlier to 137,004 vehicles, setting a company record for monthly sales. The sales are so high because China's stimulus packages helped the financial market.China's overall auto market, the world's largest, has received a strong boost in recent months from government policy support measures.

I think that this is a very interesting article becasue of how bad GM is doing in our country. It shocks me that sales are doing so well in China for GM when they are so horrible here. I also wonder if this will change anything for the fate of GM. I also wonder if China's economy is getting better, or if it is just a rally that will not last.

  3. http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/08/news/companies/hummer_bidders.reut/index.htm?postversion=2009040818
There are three bidders for General Motor Corp.'s Hummer brand. The current offers range from $100 million to $200 million in cash. One bidder is from the US and the other two are from overseas. The bidders are not automakers, but they are private equity and wealthy individuals. The buyer would take over GM's liabilities for its 125 U.S. Hummer dealers and commit to further investments in areas such as engineering, marketing and sales.
I think this would greatly help GM. The hummer industry is not helping them financially at all. I think people are still leaning towards cars with better gas mileage though, especially in the economy that we are in. Hopefully something good will come out of this sale.

  4. 1. http://moneyfeatures.blogs.money.cnn.com/2009/04/09/suicidal-financial-advisers/

    2. This article talks about the current status of financial advisors in the eye of the public. Recently in the New Yorker there was a cartoon containing two men talking about killing their financial advisors. The writer also makes a good point talking about financial advisors who have committed suicide. There have been several cases where brokers have been found dead with suicide letters awaiting the members of their families. The article just proves that this recession has been very stressful for advisors and that the public although also may be struggling should not completely blame their advisors. HE says they aren’t the enemies and that they couldn’t have guessed that this was going to happen.

    3. I definitely agree with this article, the advisors shouldn’t be blamed for everything. Especially because they themselves lost money and its not like they are living some great life while you aren’t. I believe that you trusted them in the first place for some reason so that shouldn’t mean in hard times you should just give up on them and blame them. They might have lost your money but they couldn’t have predicted what was going to happen, no one did. Everyone has to just keep there spirits up and realize that if they put there money back into the market it will eventually get better

  5. 1.http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/09/obama.immigration/index.html

    2. My article is about how The White House is planning to start addressing our immigration system. Scince there are around 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, obama has decided it's time to do something. Along with making a way for some of the immigrants to stay in the country legally, CNN has learned the Obama administration wants to remove incentives to enter the U.S. illegally. They also want to tighten border security and work with Mexico to cut down on illegal immigration.

    3. In my opinion, I found this article very interesting. For the amount of things that Obama had to deal with immediatly, I'm suprised he chose to deal with this. Although I do think its a good decision.

    2) Obama wants to cut down on immigrant incentives to join the US by beefing up border security and working with Mexico to cut down on illegal immigration.

    3) Hmm well i don't know if i personally agree with Obama on this one, I mean think about it if we cut down on immigrants well there goes our food chain workers and construction workers. I mean i dont want to come off sounding bad here but think about it arent most of the workers at fast food chains and gas stations mostly people we would consider possibly not from this country? So if Obama is to eliminate this group of hard workers wouldnt the US struggle to get people in these jobs. Couldnt this lead to an economic crisis?

  7. http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2009/autos/0904/gallery.chrysler_fiat_product/index.html

This article is about how chrysler is trying to merge with the Italian car company Fiat. Chrysler needs to merge to try and meet the U.S. governmenrs mandate. Fiat also has expertise in producing small fuel efficient vehicles. Even if chrysler makes a deal before the deadline it still might be too late for Fiats help.

I thought this article was very interesting because chrysler really dug themselves into a big whole. I think its scary that a car compnay this big could go out of business. I also think it is scary that they might have no hope to survive.

This article talks about the current epidemic of Swine Flu, that has infected people in Europe, Mexico, U.S.A and Canada. It says to take all the precautions and what to think about this soon to be pandemic.

This Swine Flu is going to and is affecting all parts of society. In the aspect of Business that many people are scared, cannot travel or interact with other countries. It also is hitting the travel industry hard because no one wants to travel to foreign countries at this time.

  9. 1)http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/28/news/international/swineflu_travel/index.htm?postversion=2009042813

2)The swine flu outbreak has sent alarm through the $770 billion U.S. travel industry. These travel industries have already been struggling and now have to contend with a possible epidemic that will just further constrict peoples travel hopes and stop profits from reaching these indutries. The analysts predict major devastation for these companies.

    3) Well this is just one more thing to be occurring at this time. Hopefully these companies will be able to survive this crisis. This new swine flu very well could lead to putting some of the smaller airlines and comapnies that are on the verge of bankruptcy over the edge. Then we would just be led right back into our economic losses

    2. My article was about how time was running out for Chryslet when on Wednesday a government-imposed deadline for Chrysler LLC was supposed to prove its viability. Most expected that the troubled company would survive. Chrysler will not be forced to shut down, although the company may still wind up declaring bankruptcy. It is also said that Chrysler will beable to avoid liquidation. In order to try keep afloat the task force said Chrysler needed to reach a deal with Italian automaker Fiat.

    3. I think this article said a lot about how our economy is in bad shape. Chrysler was definatly one of the major car companies and now they have to try and join another car company to stay in business.

  11. http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/29/news/economy/metropolitan_area_unemployment/index.htm?postversion=2009042915

Unemployment rates in 109 cities reached 10% or higher in March, almost eight times more than a year earlier, according to a government report released Wednesday. Just 14 cities reported jobless rates of at least 10% last year, the Labor Department said. Over the past year, unemployment rates in all of America's cities rose. A total of 33 metro areas registered unemployment rates that were at least 6 percentage points higher than a year ago, and another 42 areas' increases were 5 to 5.9 percentage points.

This is a very scary thing that unemployment ratess are so high. This article hit very close to home since I know of people who have lost their jobs in this tough economy. It is also scary because I wonder if the rates will go down by the time I am looking for a job. Hopefully the economy fixes itself and more people get their jobs back.

    2.
On Wednesday Starbucks announced that their net profit plunged 77%, but posted slightly better than expected quarterly profit with an 8% drop in same-store sales. Previously the store had announced that they were planning to close 1,000 stores to battle the current worldwide recession. To combat this financial turndown Starbucks cut cost by $120 million. However, signs are showing that Starbucks slide is starting to slow, and again they are planning to open more stores.

    3.
It seems that Starbucks can not learn. I believe one of the biggest reason that Starbucks is now doing so bad is not just the overall global recession, but how Starbucks over saturated the market. They simply built too many stores. Now their numbers are just not doing as worse as before, but they're not doing better, and all of a sudden they're planning to build new stores. I'm not sure what it will take to get through to Starbucks.

Unemployment rates in 109 metropolitan areas reached 10% or higher in March, almost eight times more than a year earlier. Last year, only 14 cities reported jobless rates of at least 10%, the Labor Department said. El Centro continued to have the highest metropolitan unemployment rate at 25.1%. The town is near the Mexican border and relies on agricultural employment, according to economists. The area's unemployment rate tends to rise and fall depending on the farming season. The Labor Department does not adjust the rates in its metropolitan unemployment report for seasonal changes in employment.
It is obvious that the economy is affecting everybody. A lot of people are getting put out of jobs and are struggling during these times. Hopefully there will be a turn around in the economy and the unemployment rates will soon significantly decrease.

  14. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2009/apr/28/first-100-days-obama-two-biggest-promises/ (Second Piece)

This article points out that President Obama did not keep the promise he made to keep lobbyists out of the White House. While he boldly claimed "that their days of setting the agenda are over...They will not run my White House," while on the campaign trail, Obama has appointed several lobbyists to key positions since becoming president. Even though he issued an order to keep lobbyists out, loopholes allow the administration to define "lobbyist." This means that the executive order filed by Obama is really just a way for the administration to hide lobbying from the public eye and that they have no intent on ending it completely.

I think that this is a huge promise to be broken. Since putting a hold on lobbying was the only item under the "Ethics" category on Obama's campaign website, I think that this should raise a lot of questions. In addition, this shows that neither party is immune to the influence of money (as much as the Democrats would like to deny). Overall I am disappointed that a good chance to end lobbying was lost, as it is a huge political issue in America today.

  15. Chrysler is in court today for bankruptcy hearing
    http://mrstarlo.blogspot.com/2009/04/pof-4.html#comments

Chrysler's first hearing in a New York courtroom Friday morning may offer the first clue as to whether a quick, "surgical" bankruptcy is possible. The nation's third-largest automaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday with an ambitious plan to emerge in as little as 30 days as a leaner, more nimble company. After months on government life support, Chrysler is pinning its future on a top-to-bottom reorganization and plans to build cleaner cars through an alliance with Italian automaker Fiat. In return, the federal government agreed to give Chrysler up to $8 billion in additional aid and to back its warranties.
This isn’t good. Chrysler is a huge domestic auto company and this could have a huge impact on American auto sales. Hopefully they will make it through this and be successful in the future.
